A guide to the best East Auckland beaches.

The best east Auckland beaches, starting with the closest to the CBD. Then following the coast, to the furthest.

Okahu.
Has about 440 metres of sandy foreshore with a gentle slope under water.
It is safe for swimming and is suitable for sunbathing, small boats, and has a mown grassed area adjacent to the sand, with picnic benches.
There's about 2 acres of flat grassed recreation area, with children's playground, across the road, suitable for playing ball games etc. There are public toilets.
Most suitable for swimming above half tide, as it gets shallow at low tide.
It is close to: Kelly Tarltons Underwater World, Fergskayaks and Bastion Point.

Mission Bay.
A good place for a meal and a walk along the shore.
Has about 440 metres of sandy foreshore with a car park at each end and grassed recreation space in between, with a water fountain in the middle and public toilets.
There are a good range of restaurants, takeaways, cafes and bars across the road from the shore.
There can be traffic congestion and parking problems at peak traffic times, especially sunny weekend afternoons.

Kohimarama .
Has about 770metres of sandy foreshore with a tree lined footpath between the shore and road. With private dwellings on the other side of the road.

St Heliers Bay .
Has about 700 metres of sandy foreshore with a tree lined footpath next to the road.
There is a public park at the western end with a range of shops and eateries at the eastern end. Public toilets and a children's playground at the other end.

Eastern.
Has Rogers Park at the Northern end, with a shop nearby, then about 1.5 kilometres of sandy foreshore. With an adjacent strip of grass, then the road with private dwellings lining the other side of the road. The southern end of the Esplanade, is most suitable for picnicking because there's McLeans Reserve, a grassed public park with carpark.

Omana.
Has about 1165 metres of sandy foreshore.
There's Omana Regional Park adjacent to the foreshore with safe swimming, picnic areas, barbecues and farm animals. There's walking tracks and panoramic views of the sea and islands.
There's also camping areas and overnight campervan parking.

Maraetai.
Has about 860 metres of sandy foreshore, with a pleasant boardwalk including seats. There's a grassed park area at both ends and buildings across the road, in the middle area, including shops.
There's a wharf that is popular with swimmers to jump off.

Umupuia .
Has about 1090 metres of sandy shallow foreshore, sheltered from the south round to west wind.

Miranda foreshore.
Has a Shore Bird Centre renowned for watching wading birds that feed on the tidal foreshore.

There's also an overnight self contained vehicle ( A vehicle that has a toilet included ), parking area just north of the Miranda Shore Bird Centre, right on the foreshore with panoramic views.
