Devonport also has an intriguing history from both its early European settlers and it's earlier Maori inhabitants. Starting by the wharf at the end of Victoria Road, is a memorial to the arrival of Maori people on the Tainui canoe approximately 1300 AD.
Three extinct volcanoes provide landmarks around Devonport, which are thought to have been the location of fortified Maori settlements from about 1350 AD.
Walking around the village takes you back to earlier times, because of the beautifully renovated Victorian villas lining the streets. You can get to Devonport by car or ferry. The ferry departs from the wharf, at the bottom end of Queen Street.

North Head.
North Heads history dates back to 1150 AD according to Maori lore. In the 1870’s, early Euoropean settlers occupied North Head and set up military defenses to protect the Waitemata harbour from the feared invasion by Russians that never eventuated.
You can explore the tunnels of North Head,(take a torch!), and find the disappearing guns, searchlight emplacements and other military defense structures. North Head also has Some of the best views of the Hauraki Gulf and the Waitemata Harbour.
North Head is about 1.5 kilometres from Devonport, along King Edward Parade by the water front and then follow the signs on the right to North Head.
The reserve is open from 6am to 10pm seven days a week.

The Scenic Drive.
Runs through the bush-clad Waitakere Ranges from Titirangi to Swanson in the west of Auckland. It gets its name from the sweeping views over the western parts of the Auckland Region.
The road passes through the village of Waiatarua, then the rest is mainly through native bush. It connects to the West Coast Road, Shaw Road, Konini Road and Piha Road to the surf beaches at Karekare and Piha.
There are many hiking trails starting from Scenic Drive. The Arataki Visitor Centre provides visitor information icluding maps of the walking tracks. There is a tourist railway that runs from northern Scenic Drive to the Waitakere dam. Rose Hellaby House near Waiatarua is a shop selling a facinating collection of antiques and interesting items. Parts of the road pass through private land where there are, several potters, and several architecturally designed houses in the bush, such as that of photographer Brian Brake.

Mangere Mountain.
An internationally significant cultural, historic and archaeological site, rich in Moari history. Created 20,000 years ago by volcanic eruptions. Next to Ambury Regional Park.Includes the Mangere Mountain Education Centre that provides relevant local information.
